我第一次到中国是1971 年，当时从没想到中国后来会发生如此巨大的变化，而且发展如此迅速。
20年来，中国的增长率每年达10%，这是史无前例的成就，而且中国一直处于和平之中，所以这是最大的变化。这种变化也是中国领导人丰富想象力的结果。还有另外一个大的变化：我第一次来时，中美之间没有外交关系，贸易额等于零，就是说两国间根本不存在贸易。现在的问题却是，美国担心中国对美贸易顺差太大。
第一次来的时候，中国的农村还都是公社，人们的服装千篇一律。现在发生这么大的变化，都是因为邓小平第二次复出后进行了改革开放。邓小平1979
年4 月再次掌权后，迈出了令人惊讶的步子。当时他没有模式可学，没有前例可循，全是凭着自己的想象，领导全中国进行改革开放。所以他对中国的贡献是无以伦比的。
中国的改革开放确实取得了巨大成就，但是，让我感到尤其了不起的一点却是，中国的改革采取的是循序渐进的方式，保持了稳定。现在中国的改革已不可逆转。通过改革开放，中国最终将在21
世纪成为世界上重要的大国。
中国现在已经是在亚洲地区起着关键性作用的国家，在诸如亚洲金融危机等问题上，假如没有中国的合作，将会是灾难性的结果。作为在西方国家中最具影响力的美国，与中国进行合作，将可保证世界的和平。所以，美中两国将来会成为比今天更好的伙伴，并为亚洲的稳定、进步与和平共同作出贡献。

the United States and afterwards. When got interview from Wang
Xiaopeng, the senior consultant of this publication, he said China

When I came to China
for the first time in 1971, I had never imagined that China would
have so big change in the future and, this development would be
so quick.
In the past 20 years,
China's economic increasing rate has reached 10% every year. This
is unprecedented. In the meantime, China is in peace all the time.
Therefore, this is the biggest change. This change is also the
result of the plentiful imagination of China's leaders. There
is another big change: when I came to China for the first time,
there was no diplomatic relationship between China and America.
Volume of trade was zero, that is, simply no trade between the
two countries. But the problem now is that American is worried
that China has too much favorable balance of trade to America.
When I first came,
China's countryside was full of communes. People dressed up following
the same pattern. The big change happened nowadays is due to the
reform and opening carried on by Den Xiaoping after his second
time on the stage. In April of 1979, Den Xiaoping was in power
again. China began to make tremendous steps. At that time, there
was no model to learn, no sample could be followed either. He
just let the whole China practice reform and opening according
to his imagination. So his contribution to China is incomparable.
China's reform and
opening really has achieved an enormous success. But what I fell
more amazing is that China's reform is proceeded in an orderly
way and step by step. So that China can be peace and quiet. Nowadays,
China's reform can't be reversed. By means of reform and opening,
China will finally become an important big country worldwide in
the 21 century.
China is playing a
key role in Asia now. In terms of questions such as Asian financial
crisis, there would be disastrous consequences, if there were
no China's co-operation. The co-operation of America, the country
having the biggest influence among western countries, with China
will promise world peace. Therefore, America and China will become
better partners in the future than today, and will contribute
together to Asia's steady, progress and peace.
